People ask me constantly which supplement brands I trust. My answer has always been the same: I do not start with brands. I start with nutrients.

After reviewing thousands of genetic reports and symptom histories, the pattern is clear. Most people are not missing more supplements. They are missing the right nutrients, in the right forms, at doses that make physiological sense for their individual terrain.

Before I look at a single brand, I ask:

What nutrient is actually required here?
Which pathway needs support?

Can they adjust it based on symptom response?

I look for clean, minimal formulations with no unnecessary binders, fillers, or proprietary blends. The companies I recommend most produce individual nutrients in clinically relevant forms, use third-party testing or pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing standards, and do not rely on marketing hype to sell their products. Most commercial ascorbic acid is derived from corn. For individuals with known corn reactivity or those who are highly chemically sensitive, tapioca-derived vitamin C is an important alternative. Look for pure ascorbic acid with no flavoring, no sweeteners, no immune blends, and no unnecessary excipients.

Vitamin B3

Niacinamide is one of the nutrients I reach for most consistently in orthomolecular protocols. B3 is a direct precursor to NAD, which means it is foundational to mitochondrial energy production, cellular repair, and nervous system regulation. Without adequate NAD, the body cannot efficiently generate ATP, manage inflammation, or repair DNA.

Clinically, niacinamide shows up as a priority when I see fatigue patterns, anxiety, overstimulation, poor stress recovery, nervous system dysregulation, and mitochondrial insufficiency. It is also one of the most well-studied nutrients in the orthomolecular literature, with decades of research at higher doses.

Why I Often Prefer Raw Niacinamide Powder

Powders are one of the most practical formats in orthomolecular practice. With niacinamide specifically, dosing needs to be individualized, responsive to symptoms, and adjusted over time. A capsule locks you into a fixed amount. A powder does not.

Riboflavin
Vitamin B2

Riboflavin is probably the most underestimated nutrient in nutrigenomics. Most people with MTHFR variants go straight to methylfolate. I go to riboflavin first.

B2 is the essential cofactor for MTHFR enzyme activity. Without adequate riboflavin, the enzyme cannot function properly regardless of what methylfolate is provided. Riboflavin also drives glutathione recycling through its role in supporting glutathione reductase, powers mitochondrial electron transport, and participates in thyroid hormone metabolism and iron mobilization. It is foundational to function in ways most protocols overlook.

Riboflavin Before Methylfolate

When someone presents with MTHFR variants and responds poorly to methylfolate supplementation, inadequate riboflavin status is often part of the picture. Riboflavin supports the enzyme itself. I prefer standalone riboflavin or riboflavin-5-phosphate over combination B-complex products. The active phosphorylated form (R5P) can be useful for those with impaired riboflavin conversion, though plain riboflavin is effective for most individuals. Magnesium
The most common deficiency I encounter

Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. I encounter inadequate magnesium status in the majority of people I work with, and the symptom patterns are wide-ranging: disrupted sleep, muscle tension, anxiety, fatigue, blood sugar instability, constipation, poor stress tolerance, and methylation inefficiency all show up in the context of low magnesium.

Modern agricultural practices have depleted soil magnesium significantly. Chronic stress depletes it through urinary losses. High sugar and refined carbohydrate intake accelerate excretion. Many medications also reduce magnesium status over time. It is genuinely difficult to maintain adequate tissue levels without intentional dietary or supplemental support.

Phosphatidylcholine is one of my favorite nutrients for individuals whose genetic terrain and symptom pattern point toward impaired membrane function, fat metabolism, or choline pathway inefficiency. PC is the primary phospholipid in cell membranes and is essential for membrane fluidity, bile production, fat emulsification, and neurotransmitter synthesis via acetylcholine production.

PEMT gene variants reduce the body's ability to synthesize phosphatidylcholine endogenously, which increases dietary and supplemental need significantly. I prioritize this nutrient when I see PEMT variants alongside symptoms like poor fat digestion, right-sided abdominal discomfort, fatty liver markers, or impaired hormone clearance through the liver.

Phosphatidylserine becomes one of the most clinically useful nutrients when high cortisol patterns, disrupted sleep, and overstimulation are prominent.     For the trace minerals, I see the Trace Minerals brand liquid drops contain less types of minerals and the capsule forms of other brands contain some that will overlap with other supplements. How do you decide between them and I’m assuming for the overlaps, those contribute to the total recommended daily dose per the protocol you’ve provided?

    In my personal and professional experience phosphorylated serine (Seriphos) is far better than phosphatidyl serine in lowering cortisol, I have seen many people have a paradoxical reaction with phosphatidyl serine and I think it might be related to their specific SNPs but that is just my theory, I would love to understand this through the nutrigenomic view point. It is the ONLY thing that could take down my high cortisol at night.     It’s is reassuring seeing many of the brands I have been taking for a few years now but I am wondering how often do we need to test to make sure we are not taking something our body may not be needing? I realize that are some that are needed regularly due to daily stresses and our lack of vital nutrients in today’s food—such as vitamin C and magnesium. . It is sometimes overwhelming and expensive trying to find what I need daily vs. what should be taken on occasion. I have been trying to just listen to my body. Thanks again Katie!
